Located to the southeast of the Gorth, Pirates Isle is a thriving community of pirates, scalawags, traders and other sea farers who come here for any reason imaginable. The towering mountain that rises out of the ocean is riddled with natural causeways through which ships navigate into the heart of the outpost topped by the enormous Blackmortar Castle. The castle is surrounded by a small shanty city filled with residents looking to survive on the coin brough there by the Grom's sailors and those sailors from other ships who are brave enought to frequent the black port.

The island has been inhabited this way for well over two centuries and has thrived. About 150 years ago, coastal navies came together to try and root out the pirates, who retreated into the castle where they withstood a three year seige. Eventually the coastal ships withdrew when the current leader of the pirates negotiated with them to limiting the pirate activities on the high seas.

These days, the pirates many harrass ships hailing from the defiled lands and Sestillion. They occasionally prey upon merchant ships running to and from the Gorthian and Maharoolian coasts, but they usually only take a certain amount of gold as a tithe so as not to provoke another concerted response to destroy them.

Pirate's Isle has been an unofficial gathing place for pirates and other beings of questionable character for centuries. About 125 years ago, the dread pirate Sebastian Graybeard had become so successful in his pirating that he decided to make Pirate's Isle an more "official" gathering place for pirates. He spent 20 years bringing in slaves to construct the black castle now infamously known as Blackmortar. He also had a fortified wall built on the cliffs around the entire perimeter of the small island to discourage the neighboring countries from sending any type of naval force against him.

Since then, the island has prospered under the tyrannical rule of twelve different pirate captains who have risen to take the mantle of leadership.

Black Grom

The Black Grom has ruled Pirates Isle for over 15 years when (it is rumored) he killed the previous captain in a dispute over a woman. Either way, the brutal captain immediately stepped up the pirate attacks on ships moving in and around the southern shores of Southern Houress.

Accounts from the very few who have met Black Grom an and lived to tell the tale paint him as a seven foot tall Gorthian with shoulders as broad as a halfling is tall. His teeth are all gold, and his smile is enough to blind a man in sunlight. He has a legendary libido and has never been drunk under the table.

Other Points of Interest

The Black Fleet

The ships under the Black Grom's control are sleek, fast, and powerful. Estimates of their number range from 15 to 25. The ships themselves use huge caverns that open into the island to dock, making the task of suprising them difficult and taking them by force impossible.

The Black Fleet keeps busy striking at ships from Gorth all the way to Blackmel, bringing in hundreds of gold pieces in teasure and goods weekly to sustain the ravenous pirates.

Blackmortar Castle

Perched atop the highest point on the island, Blackmortar castle is massive. Anyone trying to take it would lose hundreds of lives. Surrounding the castle is what would appear to be a normal city.

The pirates are so confident of the security of their castle and island, that they allow non-pirate ships to dock to avail themselves of the city and engage in many types of dealings.
